Q&A with Paul Liszka
- Tell us a little about yourself and what you do outside the gym.
I’m a lifelong Buffalo resident and a retired Buffalo Public School teacher specializing in Drafting and Auto CAD. I’ve been married to my wife, Melinda, for over 44 years. I’m also a proud dad to Bill and Julie and a grandfather to Natalie, all of whom keep me busy. In 2025, I will be inducted into the Buffalo Weightlifting Hall of Fame, a huge honor reflecting my 28-year powerlifting career. - What inspired you to start your fitness journey, and how did you get started?
I wanted to get stronger for football, so I started lifting in high school, training at home before eventually joining a gym. - How long have you been a member at Catalyst Fitness, and how has your routine evolved?
I’ve been a part of the Catalyst family since the 1980s, first training at the old 2001 Health Odyssey Gym on Center Road. My training has evolved over time, shifting from competitive powerlifting to maintaining strength and overall health. - Have you faced any challenges, and how did you overcome them?
Like any weight trainer, I’ve faced injuries, work obligations, and family commitments. The key to overcoming these challenges is patience, persistence, and seeking guidance from trainers when needed. - What motivates you to keep coming back to the gym?
At 68, training is a major part of my life. It helps me stay strong, flexible, and mentally focused. - Who or what inspires you to push yourself during workouts?
Catalyst Fitness has an energy that fuels my workouts. I’ve also made great friends here—my friend Mike and I train together, spotting and motivating each other every step of the way. - What are some goals you’ve achieved since joining Catalyst, and what are you working toward next?
After 28 years of competitive powerlifting, I now train for heart health and overall mobility. My goal is to stay fit, active, and strong for life. - How has being part of the Catalyst community impacted your fitness journey?
I wouldn’t train anywhere else! The gym is close to home, clean, and has an amazing staff. The sense of community here keeps me coming back. - What advice would you give to someone just starting out on their fitness journey?
Stay focused and persistent—nothing works better than consistency. Don’t give up! - How do you balance fitness with your everyday life?
If you care about yourself, you’ll find the time. Even if it’s not as much as you’d like, some training is always better than none. It’s your body—take care of it!
We are honored to celebrate Paul Liszka’s incredible journey and dedication to fitness! His story is a testament to the power of persistence and community. If you see Paul at the gym, be sure to congratulate him on his Hall of Fame induction! 👏💪
