- Tell us a little about yourself and what you do outside the gym.
I’m a retired math teacher and former basketball and volleyball coach. Currently, I’m working as a realtor and payroll manager. In my free time, I love playing basketball and volleyball, cooking healthy meals, traveling, and reading about personal growth and relationships. - What inspired you to start your fitness journey, and how did you get started?
I began in the mid-90s at the Lancaster Boys & Girls Club gym. Back then, I was losing my “baby fat” and saw others working out. I thought, “If you start working out, you’ll look like them,” and that’s how my journey began! - How long have you been a member at Catalyst Fitness, and how has your routine evolved?
I joined in 1998 when it was Gold’s Gym, and they rebranded to Catalyst in 2012. My routine has shifted over the years. I used to focus on heavy lifting, but now I prioritize functional exercises that target my core and hips while leaning out my muscles. - Have you faced any challenges, and how did you overcome them?
I’ve faced significant losses in life, like losing my father at a young age or dealing with breakups and job changes. My mantra has been, “The show goes on.” I focus on what I can control—my mental and physical health, how I carry myself, and how I care for what I own. - What motivates you to keep coming back to the gym?
During the 2020 COVID shutdown, I realized I’d never take the gym for granted again. Staying healthy as I age is a huge motivator. Honestly, it’s also about looking good—health and appearance go hand-in-hand for me! - Who or what inspires you to push yourself during workouts?
My father passed away at the age I am now, 46, and that drives me to prioritize my health. Seeing the health challenges many face today is also motivating. I love a challenge, and pushing my mind and body daily keeps me going. - What are some goals you’ve achieved since joining Catalyst, and what are you working toward next?
I’ve toned up and lost weight in the past few years through consistency. My current goals are to lose more weight steadily and improve my flexibility, especially in my core. - How has being part of the Catalyst community impacted your fitness journey?
Catalyst has been a great fit for me with its convenient locations and updated equipment. It’s a place where I’ve stayed consistent and seen real progress over the years. - What advice would you give to someone just starting out on their fitness journey?
Patience, discipline, and ambition are key. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. Work at it every day, and don’t beat yourself up if you slip up—just get back at it the next day. - How do you balance fitness with your everyday life?
I dedicate an hour or more a day to the gym, going 4–6 times a week. Some days are harder than others, but I make time whether it’s morning, midday, or after work. Your body will thank you—never take it for granted!
Justin’s journey shows how fitness can be a constant, grounding force in life. We’re grateful to have him as part of the Catalyst community!
