This month, we’re thrilled to shine the spotlight on Susan Miller, a dedicated Catalyst Fitness member whose commitment to health, fitness, and personal growth is truly inspiring. From her professional life to her passion for fitness, Susan’s story is one of resilience, dedication, and motivation.
- Tell us a little about yourself and what you do outside the gym.
I’ve been a social worker at the VA for 32 years, and I absolutely love working with the veteran population—true heroes! Outside of work, I enjoy baking and gardening. However, my greatest personal accomplishment is raising my daughter. I’m incredibly proud to share that she recently graduated from St. John Fisher University and is now a nurse!
- What inspired you to start your fitness journey, and how did you get started?
When I first began exercising, I wasn’t very consistent and felt unsatisfied with my fitness level and appearance. That changed when Ellen subbed for one of my classes. Her teaching style was unlike anything I had experienced before. I knew that if I committed to her classes and trained with her consistently, I would reach my goals—and I did!
- How long have you been a member at Catalyst Fitness, and how has your routine evolved?
I’ve been a member since 2019. Initially, I focused on taking group classes, but now I combine Ellen’s group classes with both group and personal training sessions. This combination has made a significant difference in helping me reach my fitness goals.
- Have you faced any challenges, and how did you overcome them?
Nutrition was a significant challenge for me. While I always ate healthily and drank plenty of water, I struggled with balancing protein, carbohydrates, and electrolytes. With Ellen’s patience and guidance, I learned how essential proper nutrition is for achieving fitness goals. You can’t out-train poor nutrition!
- What motivates you to keep coming back to the gym?
The physical and mental benefits I gain from working out are my biggest motivators. Ellen’s group classes and personal training sessions are both challenging and fun—the perfect combination! Plus, the friendships I’ve developed at Catalyst keep me coming back. The members here feel like family.
- Who or what inspires you to push yourself during workouts?
The way I feel after a great workout keeps me going. Ellen’s unique style of personal training also serves as a constant source of motivation.
- What are some goals you’ve achieved since joining Catalyst, and what are you working toward next?
Thanks to the personal training I’ve received at Catalyst, I’ve built the strength and endurance to complete three half-marathons. Moving forward, I want to continue building strength and improve my running pace.
- How has being part of the Catalyst community impacted your fitness journey?
Catalyst makes achieving fitness goals possible with its wide variety of group classes and top-notch equipment. The energy from other members is contagious, and it’s motivating to work out alongside people who share a passion for fitness.
- What advice would you give to someone just starting out on their fitness journey?
Be consistent, stay determined, and believe in yourself. You are capable of achieving your goals!
- How do you balance fitness with your everyday life?
I treat my fitness schedule like any other important commitment. I plan my workouts, stick to my schedule, and prioritize my health. I also meal prep and pack my gym bag the night before to set myself up for success.
Susan’s dedication to her health and wellness journey is truly admirable, and we’re so proud to have her as part of the Catalyst Fitness family. Keep crushing your goals, Susan!
